/ adminA journey of hope: Laksh’s triumph over ProgressiveFamilial Intrahepatic Cholestasis Type-I (PFIC-1)
Laksh’s inspiring journey showcases the remarkable transformation of hislife after the successful liver transplant and the significant impact of financial and medical assistance provided by organizations including The Pravin Agarwal Foundation (TPAF) on his road to recovery.
Laksh, a 9 years old boy from Beed village of Maharashtra, suffered from Progressive Familial Intrahepatic Cholestasis Type I, a rare genetic liver disorder that hindered bile flow crucial for digestion.
It beganwith tremors at the tender age of seven months. Laksh’s father took him to a Hospital in Aurangabad, where he underwent the treatment for about 1.5 months and got better. But within a week of coming back from the Hospital, Laksh’s body turned yellow; he developed Jaundice. He was taken back to the Hospital, and this time, the doctors informed the family that he had a problem with his liver.
Laksh was then referred to a specialized care centrefor further treatment. The family’s greatest fear was once again confirmed; his liver was indeed damaged, necessitating a transplant with an estimated cost of 20 Lakhsand his parents were not sure if he would recover after such an operation. They decided to wait.
Laksh’s family explored Ayurvedic remedies on recommendation of an acquaintance, hoping for a breakthrough. Despite initial signs of improvement, the return of symptoms dashed their hopes, pushing them towards continued hospital visits in search of a lifeline.
This continued for a few years and it made Laksh’s family think that he was slowly getting better. But things took a turn for better, when a close relative watched an awareness video by Dr. Bipin Vibhute on liver diseases and suggested the family to bring Laksh to Pune for a consultation. Heeding the advice, Laksh’s father took him to Sahyadri Hospital, Pune to consult with Dr. Bipin Vibhute. Dr. Vibhute, a master in his field, informed the family that Laksh needed a liver transplant and it was his last hope for survival. Dr. Bipin Vibhute was able to assure them that Laksh would be alright after the operation. The family was convinced and decided to plan for the transplant. The next challenge was the fundsrequired for the transplant. Laksh’s father confided to Dr. Bipin Vibhute about it; explaining that he was a mere farmer and didnot have the means to gather funds for the transplant.
Dr. Bipin Vibhute connected the family with the medical social worker at the Hospital, who would become a liaison between the family and the charitable organizations to source the funds. Following this, the medical social worker promptly informed TPAF about Laksh’s medical condition. TPAF contributed funds for Laksh’s transplant along with other institutions.
In sometime, funds were gathered, Laksh’s mother was identified as the donor for the liver and the transplant took place successfully on August 24, 2023, marking a significant milestone in Laksh’s journey to recovery.
Expressing heartfelt gratitude, Laksh’s family continues to acknowledge the pivotal roles played by Sahyadri Hospital, Pune, TPAF, and other foundations in helping their child. The family’s acknowledgement is reflection of the profound impact that these organizations had on Laksh’s life.
After the transplant, Laksh is gradually recovering, showing improvement in his health and gaining weight. The transplant, which became a beacon hope for the family, not only saved his life but also gave him the chance to embrace the joys of childhood anew. This whole experience, with its sad and happy moments, shows how working together can really make a big difference.
As Laksh embraces the joys of childhood anew, his story resonates as a beacon of hope, illustrating how collective acts of kindness, heartfelt donations, and steadfast medical care can transform lives and ignite the flames of optimism, even in the darkest of times. Together, we possess the power to forge a world where hope blossoms amidst adversity, lighting the way towards a brighter tomorrow.
