Iqra Khatoon, an 11-month-old baby girl from Bihar, came into her parents’ lives with love and hope. But very early on, things started to go wrong.
She was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia, and unfortunately her condition had progressed as the Kasai procedure was missed. By the time the family understood how serious it was, a liver transplant was the only option left.
Iqra’s father, Haider Shah, works as a tailor, and her mother, Yasmin Khatoon, is a homemaker. Managing daily life itself was not easy, and suddenly they were faced with the cost and stress of a major medical treatment.
What made things even harder was the lack of support from within the family. Because Iqra is a girl and their first child, her grandparents refused to help financially. They told the parents not to spend so much and instead think about having another child.
But for her parents, there was no second thought. Iqra was their child, and they were going to do everything they could to save her.
They brought her to Gleneagles Hospital, Mumbai, where doctors advised a liver transplant. In that moment, her father made a quiet but strong decision, he would be the donor.
A father who stitches clothes for a living chose to give a part of his liver to give his daughter a chance to live.
The journey was not easy. There were struggles at every step, money, emotions, and the fear of losing their child. But they kept going.
Today, Iqra is playful, healthy, and full of life.
