A liver transplant is suggested for a child when the child’s liver has deteriorated beyond repair and a transplant is the only way to save the child and give a new lease of life. Usually, liver diseases are diagnosed late because they can manifest in many ways and present themselves with a wide range of symptoms. In addition, there could be various reason for a liver to malfunction, fail or reach end-stage liver disease making a transplant necessary.
Liver disease is tricky to diagnose even for the experts; the symptoms can also baffle parents at home and seem like the seasonal flu or stomach infection.

The prevalence of liver diseases among children isn’t uncommon and knowing the early signs of damage might help save your child in the nick of time.
The early signs of liver failure or damage are:
- Excessive fatigue (feeling tired all the time)
- Nausea or vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Abdominal (belly) pain accompanied with swelling
As the liver disease progresses, it can show other symptoms like:
- Dark brown urine
- Jaundice (yellowish skin and eyes)
- Itching all over the body
- Bruising easily or bleeding for a long time
- Ascites- Swollen abdomen from fluid building up
- Brain problems, like confusion, irritability, unusual sleepiness during the day or sleeplessness at night (encephalopathy)
